That’s how much Rick spent on this MJ . 4wd and a (Puegot sadly) manual transmission.

Former owner thought it had a cracked head, but it’s fine.

He said he has a 2010 Silverado he hasn’t driven once since buying it. Don’t think you’re going to have any luck prying it away from him.

It looks pretty clean. Definitely a good buy.

Okay let’s face it, any MJ is a good buy. Even if it’s only a 4-cyl 2wd that doesn’t run.

Or maybe I'm biased, cause I currently own two.

I’m sometimes surprised to discover they’re still around. So hard to find.

Not my cup of tea, I’d rather have an M715 (ragtop ftw!), but this one impressed me.

There was a really clean one in the Toledo Jeep Fest parade:  https://oppositelock.kinja.com/toledo-the-gift-that-keeps-on-giving-1828276179

They’re still around because there really isn’t another truck that compares. It’s a midsize truck that spanked the competition when it was new, outperforming even half-tons. I’ve driven tons of trucks over the years, even far more modern competitors within the segment , and nothing else really seems to compare. Even though the newest ones are now 26 years old, it’s just a more enjoyable experience, and it’s pretty tough to put a finger on it. Like the XJ it’s based on, it’s just got that Jeep thing about it. Tough to put a finger on, really. It’s just not the soulless appliance most other small trucks seem to be.

Once you start noticing, you see them pretty frequently. There’s usually even a couple up for sale in your area. Most people just don’t really notice old small  trucks, because for the most part, they're soulless appliances that don't attract attention.

Definitely a straight six, don’t know what engines came with the 1988 MJs, if I’m even remembering the year correctly.

Pioneer trim.

Even if it was a decent used pistol, that's still a sub-$500 MJ! Nice!

Former wrench to the rescue.

It’s an AMC 4.0, Renix system. The BA-10/5 was only used for the 4.0. The 2.5 got the AX-5. They converted to AX-15 post’89.

Like RootWyrm said, definitely a Ren ix. Renault/Bendix joint effort for fuel injection. Not really much you can do power-wise but I had a whole bunch of goodies on mine (CAI, header, exhaust, larger injectors) before I wrecked it. I might have a distributor and plugs and assorted sensors if they need any.

Shit I forgot I literally have a new flywheel and clutch for a 4.0L/BA combo.

Uh, you don’t NEED to do anything to a Renix power-wise. It’s a very intelligent self-adjusting system. You don’t need to mess with the code. It will add power with parts on it’s own.

I don’t know when I’ll meet him again, but I’ll try to remember to mention that I can track down some gear.

His biggest frustration so far is finding a tail light cover. I pointed him to a couple of Jeep parts sites.

ORLY? All my teenager bolt-on crap did help, and I was thiiiiiiiis close to getting an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, but then I got a stroker.

If you balance things correctly, absolutely. If you throw things out of balance, no amount of code change will unfuck your motor. It also doesn’t help that the Jeep world is almost as rife with snake oil bullshit as Honda.

Somewhere around here, I actually have a bolt-on recipe for the 4.0/Renix. It’s a slightly difficult motor to balance right.
